Also, Panama uses the US dollar as its currency alongside the Panamanian Balboa, making it very convenient for American travelers!

⚓ 1. The Panama Canal — One of the World’s Greatest Engineering Feats

The Panama Canal is one of the most extraordinary human achievements in history — an 80km waterway cutting through the narrowest point of the Americas to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, saving ships the 20,000km journey around South America’s Cape Horn. Completed in 1914 after a decade of work by tens of thousands of workers, the canal handles about 5% of the world’s maritime trade. The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center offers a spectacular viewing platform where you can watch enormous container ships and cruise liners pass through the locks — an unforgettable experience. The canal was expanded in 2016 with a new set of larger locks that can accommodate today’s massive “neo-Panamax” container ships.

🇵🇦 In Spanish: El Canal de Panamá es una de las obras de ingeniería más importantes de la historia. Conecta los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico y maneja aproximadamente el 5% del comercio marítimo mundial.

🏙️ 2. Panama City — Old & New Side by Side

Panama City is one of the most visually striking capitals in the Americas — a dramatic skyline of gleaming skyscrapers rising beside the Pacific Ocean, just minutes away from the cobblestone streets and crumbling colonial beauty of the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood. Casco Viejo (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a charming labyrinth of plazas, baroque churches, French and Spanish colonial mansions, boutique hotels, rooftop bars, and excellent restaurants. The contrast between the ultramodern financial district and this 350-year-old neighborhood — sometimes visible in a single photograph — is one of the most striking urban scenes in Latin America. Don’t miss the Panama Viejo ruins, the Biomuseo (designed by Frank Gehry), and the incredible Causeway islands.

🇵🇦 In Spanish: Ciudad de Panamá combina modernos rascacielos con el encantador Casco Viejo, un barrio histórico declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Es una de las ciudades más dinámicas y cosmopolitas de América Latina.

🏝️ 3. Bocas del Toro — Caribbean Island Paradise

Bocas del Toro is Panama’s most popular tourist destination — a stunning archipelago of nine main islands and hundreds of smaller islets off the Caribbean coast near the Costa Rican border. The main town of Bocas Town on Isla Colón has a colorful, laid-back Caribbean atmosphere with waterfront restaurants and bars built on stilts over the sea. The surrounding waters are exceptional for snorkeling and diving — the coral reefs are home to tropical fish, seahorses, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and rays. The nearby Bastimentos National Marine Park protects pristine beaches where red frogs (ranas rojas) live and sea turtles nest. Bocas is paradise for backpackers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking an authentic Caribbean escape.

🇵🇦 In Spanish: Las Islas de Bocas del Toro son el destino turístico más popular de Panamá. El archipiélago caribeño es famoso por sus playas vírgenes, su vida marina excepcional y sus ranas rojas endémicas.

🌿 4. Soberanía National Park — Birdwatching Capital of the World

Soberanía National Park is one of the most accessible and extraordinary tropical rainforest parks in the world — located just 25km from Panama City, it protects a large swathe of primary rainforest along the banks of the Panama Canal. The park is world-famous among birdwatchers — the Pipeline Road inside the park is consistently ranked as one of the top birdwatching sites on the entire planet, with over 500 species recorded including harpy eagles, toucans, trogons, and motmots. You can also spot sloths, anteaters, coatis, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and even jaguars (rarely). The fact that this biodiversity hotspot is a 20-minute taxi ride from a major capital city is extraordinary.

🇵🇦 In Spanish: El Parque Nacional Soberanía es uno de los mejores destinos de observación de aves del mundo, con más de 500 especies registradas. Está ubicado a solo 25 km de Ciudad de Panamá, junto al Canal.
